We recently came across an article from Eyedolatry entitled, New Implantable Telescope Brings Better Vision to Those with Advanced Macular Degeneration, that we found incredibly intriguing. A new implantable telescope has been created, which allows patients with macular degeneration to improve some of their central vision range. While there are a lot of qualifiers for someone to be eligible for this surgery, if you meet the criteria this new implant could change the way you see.
The article states, "In the course of one year after telescopic implantation in the better seeing eye, 90.1% of 206 participants had gained 2 lines of letters on a visual acuity test, and 66.6% achieved 3 lines of visual improvement. This improvement in vision can mean the difference in recognizing faces, or living more independently. You aren't going to be driving or reading small font books, but it can make navigating every day tasks much easier and safer." This is a wonderful breakthrough in the optical industry. We have all used or at least heard of laundry detergent pods at some point, but did you know they could pose a major threat to your family? The dangers of ingesting the contents inside those pods or squirting it in your eyes is very real and a recent article from The New York Times compiles all the pod related injuries from 2012 to then end of 2013. It's shocking to see the numbers and to see just how many children have had an incident. The article entitled, Detergent Pods Pose Risk to Children, Study Finds, by Catherine Saint Louis discusses the sheer volume of incidents and the effects on children from coming in contact with these pods.
The article states, "Since the introduction of colorful, single-load packets of laundry detergent in 2012 through the end of 2013, more than 17,000 children under age 6 ate or inhaled the contents or squirted concentrated liquid from a packet into their eyes, researchers reported Monday." The article goes on to state that 2 children have actually died because of this. These statistics are causing concern among parents of young children and health officials who are calling for a safer product and a safer method to store it that is child proof. With these pods looking like toys or candy, it is very easy for children to mistake them for such and ingest one or squeeze its contents into their eyes. It is important for consumers to take precaution if purchasing these products and it is equally important that manufacturers of these products take notice and ensure the safety of their consumers.
